No one knows the extent of the freshly crowned Shadow King’s power. Some say he can command the shadows that swirl around him to do his bidding. Others say they speak to him, whispering the thoughts of his enemies. Regardless, Alessandra knows what she deserves, and she’s going to do everything within her power to get it.
But Alessandra’s not the only one trying to kill the king. As attempts on his life are made, she finds herself trying to keep him alive long enough for him to make her his queen—all while struggling not to lose her heart. After all, who better for a Shadow King than a cunning, villainous queen?

"They never found the body of the first and only boy who broke my heart." And they never will. -Alessandra, The Shadow Between Us
Reading that first line, I was immediately hooked. There is nothing better than a protagonist with questionable morals. I will admit the part about her wanting to marry the king and then kill him is why I bought this book.
Alessandra attends a ball and plays a very calculated and thought out plan. To get the king to notice her without ever glancing in his direction. It works. He invites her to stay at court with him and while Alessandra tries to get the king to fall in love with her to kill him and take his empire, she finds out someone is already trying to assassinate him.
Well that just won't do for Alessandra, that would ruin her whole plan of having the empire to herself. So she sets out and aligns herself with Kallias, as they solve the mystery of who wants to kill the king.
Alessandra may be a murderer but Tricia does such a great job getting us to feel for her. I mean who hasn't wanted their ex-lover who broke their heart to perish an untimely death. Ahem, maybe not at our own hands, but you know what I mean.
There's one more problem for Alessandra as she tries to woo the king, there is a law that no one can touch him, lest they be hanged. A slight snag for Alessandra but nothing she can't handle.
I was thoroughly pleased with the ending as a great big twist presented itself and it was jaw dropping. The Shadows Between Us was a wickedly fun ride and by the end I was a fan of Alessandra and in love with the Shadow King!
