Synopsis from GoodReads:
Cass can pull back the Veil that separates the living from the dead.
When Cass's parents start hosting a TV show about the world's most haunted places, the family heads off to Edinburgh. Here, graveyards, castles and secret passageways teem with restless phantoms.
But when Cass meets a girl who shares her "gift", she realizes how much she still has to learn about the Veil—and herself. And she'll have to learn fast. The city of ghosts is more dangerous than she ever imagined.
My Thoughts-Spoiler Free
Cassidy Blake can see the dead even her best friend Jacob is a ghost. She can also cross into the veil where the spirits reside after death but only temporary.
Her parents are writers and write ghost stories of all things. In fact they land a documentary TV show where they visit haunted cities and the ghost legends in that land, except Cass is pretty sure neither of them have actually seen or met a ghost.
Unfortunately, for Cass she can't tell anyone her secret. Even her parents. As they start filming their TV show, their first stop is Edinburgh, a city teeming with ghosts. There Cass and Jacob meet Lara, a teen girl who has the same gift as Cass, except she knows far more about their ability and helps Cass understand her purpose.
While in the veil, Cass encounters a mysterious spirit who legend says takes the lives of children and she has her eyes set on Cassidy. What is it about Cass that the spirit wants? That's what we find out. It's a good one, I promise.
I love Jacob and the relationship between him and Cass. Jacob may be a ghost but we get a 3D version of him full of voice and personality. I loved every bit of him. I hope we get to find out his story in book 2. Cassidy is such a great flawed character. I wasn't annoyed by her mistakes but more like, oh yeah, I can see how that happened. I think we've all been there.
This book was a fast read and if you're looking for a spooky story this season, pick up City of Ghosts and you can even read it with your kiddos!
